The Data Warehouse Development Life Cycle
The Data Warehouse Team
* Legacy Database Experts--Legacy database experts are the
Remote DBAs, SAs, and programmers who can assist in the analysis and
extraction of data from the legacy systems. Members of this sub-team
are usually chosen for their expertise in understanding their OLTP
applications, especially in the areas of data extraction and data
formatting. Dealing with members of the legacy team can sometime be
challenging because legacy team members may feel “trapped” in
ancient technology. Consequently, it is often helpful to orient the
legacy staff to the “big picture” relating to the data extraction,
cleansing, and loading processes of the data warehouse.
* Data Warehouse Remote DBA--A data warehouse Remote DBA is often a senior
Oracle database administrator who has the technical skills required
to ensure that the data warehouse is fast and efficient. The Remote DBA
will be responsible for developing backup and recovery strategies as
they directly apply to the data warehouse, horizontally partitioning
the fact tables into manageable pieces, and creating the Oracle SGA
and ensuring optimal data warehouse performance. If an Oracle
parallel server is chosen as part of the software configuration, the
Oracle Remote DBA should be trained in the use of Oracle with SMP or MPP
processors. Again, it is often wise for organizations to hire
outside Oracle Remote DBA consultants to conduct a review of existing
Oracle database architectures, and this cost should be incorporated
into the project estimates.
* Operations Manager--The operations manager controls the
hardware and the machine room. The operations manager will be
challenged with devising methods for enforcing physical data
security, backup and recovery systems, disaster recovery systems,
and capacity planning. The area of backup and recovery is especially
challenging to an operations manager when many terabytes of data
must be kept recoverable. The operations manager should develop a
close working relationship with the Oracle Remote DBA, and the systems
administrators in developing a strategy for operations functions.
* Metadata Specialist--The metadata specialist is usually a
senior data administrator who, ideally, has an intimate knowledge of
the data in the operational systems, whether the systems are legacy
databases such as IMS or OLTP Oracle databases. In addition to
understanding the data structures and data relationships, the
metadata specialist must also be well-versed in SQL and understand
the ramifications of not null data characteristics. The metadata
specialist will work closely with the legacy data extraction team to
develop a common data format for the extraction and to devise a
method for cleansing and validating the data.
